Stephanie lived behind me in Northbridge. I think she came to Northbridge from the city in 5th grade ( maybe 4th). I lost my 4th grade picture so I can't be sure. Maybe John Collette or Paula Murphy remembers better than me. We were all friends at Gallinas School and then Santa Venetia Junior High. Stephanie's name was Stephanie Whalen at the time. She had a sister named Sandy, I think. Her mom must have married Mr. Borruso when they came to Northbridge. Stephanie was part of the Northbrige gang - me, Jackie Smith, Paula Murphy, Betsy Noga, Holly Harton, Bill Saleme, Jim Walker, Dee Williams, Janet Parker, Jeff Bacich, Cheryl Brown, Dan Sturm, Chris Arnsbarger and Jan Hamilton ( she moved away before junior high). I always liked Stephanie. We used to talk over the fence. Her stepdad owned Lighthouse #9 on Fisherman's Wharf. I was always very impressed by that when I was a kid. I'm so sorry to hear that she died.
Stevie and I knew each other because my sister and her stepsister were best friends. She didn't care that I wasn't cool she was still my friend. She liked you for who you were and not anything else. She died a little over a year before I had my daughter and my husband talked me out of naming her Stephanie because he knew that it would prolong the hurt and he was right. She crossed out Borruso in my yearbook and wrote in Whalen instead. I remember going to SF with her stepdad and the two of them changing the radio station the whole way over and back. It took her mom years before she would let me have any of her salsa, I was a skinny red headed super white kid so she didn't think I could handle the heat. She had been married once but it was annulled. She had an older stepsister-Kathy, a younger sister-Sandy and two half brothers-Frankie and David. She was the only person from TLHS that I kept in touch with when I left just before my Sophmore year even though I had known most of the kids since 4th grade. I still miss her very much.
